FOR TRAVELLERS

  • Moscow has an excellent cashless payment system, you can pay with a bank card almost everywhere, however, currently foreign cards do not work in Russia. Therefore, if you don't have a Russian card, you need to bring cash with you on your trip. Remember that you can bring into Russia strictly up to 10,000 dollars (per person) without declaration.

  • Before traveling, be sure to download useful applications such as 2GIS and Yandex Maps (navigators), Yandex.cab (cab service), Samokat or Yandex Lavka (Food delivery service), Yandex Metro (subway map) and Yandex Food or Delivery Club (food delivery service from restaurants and cafes).

  • Be sure to download any translator, such as Google Translate. You will definitely need it, as not everyone in Moscow speaks English. The official language in Russia is Russian.

  • Before you start your trip, determine a list of sights to visit. Moscow is a huge city with a lot of parks, museums, theaters, restaurants and other interesting locations, to cover which in one or several trips you will definitely not be able to. If this is your first trip to Moscow, start with the most iconic sights.

  • The first thing you need to do upon arrival is to buy a local SIM card. You can buy it at special counters at the airport, in any shopping mall or supermarket, in specialized branches of mobile operators. When buying a SIM card, choose tariffs with advanced internet options.

  • In Moscow, only the local currency - rubles - is accepted. Therefore, it is important to exchange money immediately upon arrival. Exchange offices at the airport have unfavorable rates, so we do not recommend changing large sums there. It is better to exchange currency in banks. You should have your passport with you. It is recommended to refuse the services of private exchange offices/persons, no matter how favorable the terms of the deal may seem.

  • Moscow is a fairly safe city. Central districts of the city are suitable for evening walks, where there are a lot of people even at night, and it is better to refuse from walking in distant from the center districts in the late hours.

  • In places of large crowds of people should beware of pickpockets. In no case should not be left unattended outerwear and bags. When going for a walk, you should take a minimum amount of valuable things with you. You should always carry your passport with you. The police can stop you at any time and in any place just to check your documents.

  • In case of emergency, call 112. This is a single number for all operators. The call from a cell phone is free and is possible even if the number is blocked or the SIM card is not inserted in the phone. The Moscow Tourist Information Support Center operates in the capital at +7 (800) 300-61-22 or +7 (495) 122-01-11. Calls are charged at your operator's rates. Call-center works round the clock. Specialists speak Russian and English.

  • Tourist police patrol pedestrian routes in the center of Moscow. Its officers are easily recognizable by their armbands with the word Tourist Police on them. They speak English, but there are also those who speak German, Spanish, French and Chinese. Tourist Police not only guard the most popular places in the city, but also help tourists not to get lost. It is also their task to investigate thefts and robberies against visitors to the city.

  • The most convenient way to get around the city is by metro. You can get to any district of Moscow by metro. Train intervals are 1.5 - 3 minutes. The fare is 64 rubles. In order not to get confused in the subway, use the application Yandex Metro, it will not only show you the optimal route of your trip, but also the exact travel time. All possible types of public transportation are available in the city, but during the daytime traffic on highways is very difficult.

  • Traffic is very high in Moscow, and during peak hours you can spend up to several hours in traffic jams. If you travel by car or cab, plan your trips in advance.

  • If you use cab services, you should remember that the cost of the trip will depend on the time of day, traffic congestion, and weather conditions. For example, a ride in the rain at 9 a.m. on Monday will cost you more than, for example, in clear weather on Sunday afternoon.

  • If you are traveling with children, remember that according to the law of the Russian Federation, children under the age of 12 are not allowed to ride in a car without a special child seat. When placing an order in the cab app, select the appropriate fare - "with children". If you did not specify that you are with a child and you are given a car without a child seat, the driver will refuse the trip, and you will be charged a penalty for the failed trip.

  • We do not recommend renting cars without a driver. Navigation systems do not work well in the city center - their signals are blocked by the federal security service. Even experienced motorists, who know the city very well, sometimes can't orient themselves without a navigator, and guests of the capital won't be able to do it.

  • All streets of Moscow are equipped with surveillance cameras, there is a system of face recognition. Be attentive, do not commit any, even minor, offenses - do not cross the road in an inappropriate place, throw garbage only in garbage cans, pay for public transportation, etc.
